It has been widely touted in recent weeks that Jose Mourinho will replace Louis van Gaal at Manchester United this summer.
Although United have claimed they are happy with their current manager, the rumours refuse to die.
With a new manager, normally comes a squad reshuffle and a new style of play. So we take a look at five potential players that Mourinho could show the exit door, should he become the next United manager.
Antonio Valencia -The Ecuador international has struggled this season with injuries and when he has played, van Gaal’s persistence to feature him in a fullback position has certainly highlighted his defensive frailties.Valencia has two years left on his contract which means he will be in no rush to leave, but Mourinho will certainly be looking to a more defensively minded fullback for his squad.
Michael Carrick -Now seen as the ‘veteran’ of the squad, Carrick may not have too many years left at the top. His patient style of build up play may also be a decisive factor for Mourinho, as he favours a more robust player shielding the back four. This, combined with niggling injuries over the past two seasons, could spell the end at Old Trafford for the England midfielder.
Marouane Fellaini -Fans and pundits haven’t really taken to Fellaini during his spell at Manchester United. Acquired during David Moyes’ ill-fated reign, the Belgian’s apparent lack of technical ability has been evident in large patches and Mourinho may well choose to move the player on this summer.
Memphis Depay -Many expected big things from Depay following his big money move from PSV last summer. However, several lethargic performances and an apparent lack of effort haven’t exactly endeared him to United fans of late.Mourinho, who favours a more hard working type of player, could well opt to sell the Dutch winger in the summer should his attitude not improve. However, with age and evident ability on his side, Depay could yet win the Portuguese boss over by knuckling down and performing consistently.
Juan Mata -Mata’s relationship with Mourinho has been well documented in recent years. The former Chelsea manager allowed Mata to leave the Blues during the 2013/2014 season, mainly due to the Spanish playmaker’s lack of defensive qualities.Should Mourinho take the reigns at Old Trafford, a similar fate may be cast upon Mata as the new boss would look for a more robust player in the middle of the pitch.
