“Six degrees of separation” is a theory that everyone is connected by 6 or fewer steps away, by way of introduction. But Facebook just that world is more closely connected than you might think. After studying 1.59 bn people active FB users, the team determined that the number is actually 3.57 not 6. So the theory is now “three-and-a-half degrees of separation,” where each person in the is connected to every other person by an average of three-and-a-half other people. FB CEO Mark Zuckerberg is 3.17 degrees of separation from all Facebook users. Technology has help shrink the collective “degrees of separation” over the past 5 years thus shortening the distance between any 2 people in the world.
